D.I.Y: Ty-dying tutorial

Hello all, it’s been long awaited but it’s finally here!

My D.I.Y Ty-dying tutorial!

You will need:

  • Fabric dye (I used DYLON hand fabric dye)
  • White or light coloured fabric made of cotton, such as pillow case or clothes
  • (Other details are on the back of the packet dye)
  • White or light coloured fabric made of cotton, such as pillow case or clothes
  • Elastic bands
  • Salt, hot and cold water.
  • A bucket for mixing the dye and a stick to stir.

Here we go!

  1. Fill your bucket with about 5  litres of hot/warm water, add alot of salt (The exact amount is on the pack of fabric dye)
  2. Stir to dissolve the salt and add the entire contents of the fabric dye, stir to dissolve.
  3. Using elastic bands gather a clump of your fabric and twist and spin into knots, tighten with elastic bands. Repeat as often as you like until all fabric is used. Bigger twist’s give bigger swirly circles, smaller give small circles.
  4. Dunk the fabric into your dye bucket. Stir for about 15 minutes making sure to get all the fabric covered, then stir every 15 minutes for a short while. For this dress I made sure the fabric was completely immersed for 45 minutes.
  5. After 45 minutes take out the fabric and let it drip any excess back into the bucket until all was done. Then rinse the item under cold water until the water runs clear. Make sure to squeeze any excess out! Then rinse it with warm water and let it drip excess water off.
  6. In my experience I’ve found it’s best to let it dry naturally to get the best result. I usually put it in the tumble dryer until it’s ready but if you want better results, let it dry naturally. It will take longer but it will be worth it:)
  7. When it is fully dry remove the elastic bands and iron if needed. At this point I’m usually really happy with my finished piece:)

**Remember to wash your items separately for the first few washes as the excess dye will run onto your other clothes, either than or wash it with darks:]**
